The Devaluation of the Teaching of English in Public Schools and the Consequences to the Market

Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand the possible reasons why elementary andsecondary students of public schools do not learn English effectively. It is an important themefor business and educational area for it is proved that people who speak two or morelanguages can get better salaries. In order to reach our goals we placed a questionnaire toHigh School students in a public school, read articles, accessed Official Publications and hadaccess to texts that shows the market value of knowing another language. Finally, we werecertain that school needs to add in its horizon that learning English is not only important forRevista Científica Hermes 7: 155-168, 2012cultural or educational reasons, but also for changing the life of their students as it makes itpossible for them to change their salary status at work.
